May is National Home Improvement Month (NHIM), a time to celebrate home improvement and make it easier for homeowners to find experts to help with home transformations. This year, we’re celebrating by highlighting some recent renovations to inspire your next home improvement project!
Waterfront Roof Replacement
The roof on this Annapolis, Maryland waterfront home needed a replacement. The light gray did not match the beautiful cedar siding, but more importantly, the skylights and other areas of the roof were leaking, there was inadequate ventilation, and some shingles had even been blown off! Brothers installed new roof layers to protect the home against water penetration, placed new Velux deck-mounted skylights, and made sure the new roof was properly ventilated by installing new ridge and bathroom exhaust vents. This beautiful new roof, with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration architectural shingles in aged copper, will not only protect the home for years to come, but the range of red, brown, and grey tones will also continue to complement the cedar siding as it ages from caramel brown to a silver-grey over time.
Baltimore Primary Bath
This Baltimore, Maryland primary bathroom felt dated with light wood cabinets and large tile with grout on both the floor and countertops. Additionally, the shower area was cramped, and the tub seemed out of place. The renovated bathroom utilizes white tiling on the floor and tub surround as well as an expanded shower footprint with a frosted glass door to make the room feel more spacious. The homeowners chose a stunning blue Fieldstone vanity that became a focal point in the room. They also included unique personal touches like the Daltile retro round tiles in denim blue for the built-in shower shelves and dual Moen tilting oval mirrors over the vanity. One of our favorite things about this bathroom is how the new design plays off the beautiful natural wood ceilings, letting them shine along with the renovated space.
Coastal Kitchen Remodel
This modern and bright Annapolis, Maryland kitchen remodel included a complete change in the floorplan with a new layout – almost doubling the space. The homeowners wanted to keep the original hardwood flooring, find better storage solutions – they were keeping some kitchen appliances in the basement! – and design a larger kitchen island. They also did not like the small window and were considering a major renovation to replace it with a larger one. But Brothers’ designers realized the issue was not the size but rather that the window did not feel balanced. So, instead of replacing it, we created a floating shelf coffee nook that makes the window feel more proportionate. The rest of the home had a coastal-inspired design, so to match the aesthetic, the homeowners chose a custom light blue paint color for the hand-laid beadboard island and custom range hood cover. Now, this coastal kitchen feels right at home on the Chesapeake Bay.
Rural Maryland Farmhouse Remodel
This Upperco, Maryland 1800’s Farmhouse began as a 544 square foot home. The homeowners fell in love with the property and charm of the house but needed a larger layout. Brothers transformed this space into a 5,400 square foot modern farmhouse while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure for an authentic farmhouse aesthetic and to preserve this piece of history. Focusing on the home’s exterior, Brothers expanded the house on both sides and created a large deck and outdoor space, complete with accordion doors that allow light to fill the rooms inside. To maintain the black and white farmhouse feel, the homeowners chose CertainTeed Presidential Shake shingles in charcoal black, black aluminum downspouts, and a metal roofing accent over the front porch. The white HardiPlank smooth siding was combined with grey stone for the ultimate modern farmhouse exterior. We are amazed at what was possible with the custom home building project!
